medcom.id, Amman: Indonesia officially has honorary consul in Palestine after Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi inaugurated Maha Abou Shushes as honorary consul.
"I stand here as representative of the Indonesian government for the inauguration of Maha Abou Shushes as Indonesia's honorary consul in Ramallah, Palestine," said Retno at Indonesian Embassy in Amman, Jordan, Sunday (3/13/2016).
"I believe the appointment of Consul Shushes could make Indonesia closer to Palestine and vice versa. The appointment is also a further implementation of Indonesia's support to Palestine," she added.
Retno mentioned Indonesia's constitution states that freedom is the alienable right of all nations and colonialism must be abolished in this world.
"Therefore, Indonesia firmly supports independent and sovereign Palestine," she continued.
Shushes as honorary consul could improve economic relations between Indonesia and Palestine. In the past two years, trade between the two countries has increased threefold.
"Honorary consul is a bridge for the two nations. One of the honorary consul's roles is to protect Indonesian citizens in Palestine. Annually, there are 50 thousand Indonesians who come to Palestine," she explained.
Meanwhile, Consul Shushes said she feels proud that she is appointed as Indonesia's honorary consul to Palestine. The Palestinian businesswoman said Indonesia is a strong country.
"I wish close relations between Palestine and Indonesia could be maintained. However, we must work hard because we have many challenges," Shushes said.
"We know that Indonesia is our strong ally. Among other countries, Indonesia is the closest in our heart," she added.
Shushes said she would like to build stronger relations between people in the two countries. She targets 100 thousand visitors from Indonesia to Palestine.
