medcom.id, Jakarta: The South China Sea is hotly contested by several claimant countries. Non-claimant state like the United States (US) also closely observes the dispute.
strategic study professor from US Naval War College, Peter Dutton, mentioned Indonesia as a non-claimant state also has important role in the issue.
"Even though Indonesia is not a claimant state in the South China Sea, Indonesia has important role there. Indonesia has intention to solve the South China Sea dispute," said Dutton during teleconference held by US Embassy in Jakarta, Wednesday (3/30/2016).
China claims almost the whole area in the South China Sea while Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Brunei Darussalam claim parts of it.
The Philippines has filed the dispute to International Arbitration Court last year. However, China still insists the whole region is part of its sovereignty. "We must be worried about China's next move," Dutton added.
As a non-claimant state, Indonesia should closely monitor the latest dynamic in the area.
