medcom.id, Jakarta: Indonesian Embassy in Damascus, Syria rescued nine Indonesians workers from Aleppo on Monday (7/18).
Aleppo is the second biggest city in Syria. It is also one of the most dangerous battlefields in the Syrian civil war.
Many Indonesians are still trapped in the city. Most of them are housemaids and other informal workers.
"We must protect Indonesians in Aleppo," said the embassy's consular official AM Sidqi in a press release, on Tuesday (7/19/2016).
The Indonesian government has stopped sending workers to Syria since 2011. However, human trafficking syndicates are still trying to smuggle Indonesians to the country.
Indonesian Embassy in Damascus still maintains representative office in Aleppo. Its main purpose is to rescue the Indonesians there.
The government has repatriated more than 12 thousand Indonesians from Syria since 2012.
