Makassar: The National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) has warned that the General Elections Commission (KPU) is prone to cyber attacks ahead of the 2019 simultaneous general and presidential elections.
"It may attack KPU's IT systems. It may also attack mobile applications," BSSN detection and identification deputy Inspector General Police Dharma Pongrekun told reporters on Tuesday.
Indonesia will hold the first ever simultaneous general and presidential elections on April 17. Voters will elect the president, vice president as well as members of national and local legislative bodies on the same day.
According to KPU, more than 190 million people will be eligible to vote this year. In addition to that, around 800 thousand polling stations will be opened on the voting day.
"BSSN will stay neutral in elections. We will protect the country from cyber attacks," he added.
In order to run for presidency, Incumbent President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is endorsed by PDIP, Golkar Party, PKB, PPP, NasDem Party, Hanura Party, PKPI, PBB, Perindo Party and PSI. On the other hand, opposition leader Prabowo Subianto is supported by Gerindra Party, Democratic Party, PAN, PKS and Berkarya Party.
BSSN is the successor of the National Encryption Agency (Lemsaneg). Its establishment is based on Presidential Regulation Number 53 of 2017.
