Indonesia Not Ready for Electric Car

Ekawan Raharja • 22 January 2016 18:26
medcom.id, Jakarta: Various global automotive brands are making electric vehicles. However, Indonesia seems to be unprepared to develop the environment-friendly car.

Industry Ministry's component industry division chief Yan Sibarang Tandiele believes electric car could be an alternative for the future. However, government's position until now is still wait and see.

Yan does not know when the electric cars will be developed in Indonesia. In the roadmap for automotive industry made by government, conventional vehicle will still dominate until 2025.

"Electric vehicle is planned for 2020. However the development needs strategy and pilot project," added Yan.

He explains various infrastructures must be prepared before electric car could be sold in Indonesian market. However, government will not forbid company that wants to develop electric car for research purposes.

OICA (Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles) recorded that in 2014, 2.7 million electric cars have been sold in the world. In 2020, 10 million electric vehicles are estimated to be sold worldwide.
