LAPAN-A2, First Micro Satellite Fully Made in Indonesia

medcom.id, Jakarta: Taking place at the office of LAPAN, Rawamangun, East Jakarta, the Institution of National Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) held a relaxed talk with the press and invited guests, as related to the launch of the latest satellite, LAPAN-A2. The first micro satellite made solely by Indonesia has been launched in September 28, in India.

The Head of LAPAN, Thomas Djamaluddin stated that LAPAN-A2 is currently in orbit. The launch was successful, as 1.5 hours following the launch, LAPAN-A2 has entered the LEOP testing (Launch and Early Orbit Phase).

The phase is the critical moment for the life of the satellite, as at the time, it is vulnerable in failing due to the pressure of the launching. There are three main missions of the micro satellite, which are the amateur radio communication vessel, ship activity observer and earth satellite imaging.

More specifically, the micro satellite is operating on the equator line of 6 degrees North Latitude and 6 degrees South Latitude. LAPAN-A2 is considered to be successful in conducting the mission, as it is very useful for the analysis and further experiments. In a day, the satellite circles Indonesia up to 14 times.

"LAPAN-A2 has orbited at the height of 650 kilometers from the earth's atmosphere, as it will pass through Indonesia 14 times a day," mentioned Thomas.

For observation, LAPAN uses two main observer stations in Bogor (West Java) and Biak (Papua).

"During the first month, we were still cooperating with German professors to observe directly."

LAPAN-A2/ORARI is the second experimental satellites launched by LAPAN, with several missions. As with the LAPAN-A1, which was fully experimental, LAPAN-A2 is also taking the role as the experimental satellite. The micro satellite will operate for two or three years.
