medcom.id, Jakarta: The government has approved roadmap for e-commerce industry to develop business and increase employment in the sector.
Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara explained the government has decided to allow big foreign e-commerce companies to enter the sector as long as it doesn't threaten local small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
Rudiantara explained the decision was made to boost foreign direct investment (FDI) and improve competitiveness.
"There are 31 initiatives for e-commerce. One of them is to erase e-commerce from negative investment list. Currently, foreign player is forbidden but in the near future it will be allowed. It is in line with FDI. But it excludes SMEs because it should be protected," Rudiantara said at the Coordinating Ministry of Economy, Jakarta, Thursday evening (1/14/2016).
Regarding taxes, the small and medium e-commerce companies will be imposed one percent income tax (PPh). while tax for large e-commerce companies will be decided soon.
Furthermore, he said the roadmap could create a huge potential of business and state incomes in the future.
"If the e-commerce roadmap is applied strictly this year. The industry could reach USD130 billion in 2020," he concluded.
