medcom.id, Bandung: Bandung is known by the beauty of its flowers, as it is nicknamed as the Flower City. However, Indonesia's first nuclear reactor has been standing at one of the city's corner which is famous for its factory outlets.
TRIGA 2,000 Reactor is located in Jalan Tamansari 71, Bandung, which is between the Bandung Zoo and Sasana Budaya Ganesha (Ganesha Cultural Center). The reactor was initially operational in 1965, following the officiation by President Soekarno.
"Indonesia has entered the atom era. With the mastery of atom technology, then Indonesia is prepared to enter the modern era," mentioned President Soekarno during the officiation speech of TRIGA 2,000 Reactor.
TRIGA is an abbreviation of the Training Research Isotope Production by General Atomic. Meanwhile, 2,000 shows that the maximum reactor capacity currently is at 2,000 kW.
Since it has been operated, the reactor is used for research and development in the efforts of mastering the technology of radioisotope production. Radioisotope is a radioactive element able to be used for an atomic and morphologic body examinations. It can also be used to treat tumors or cancer.
The first health service using the first radioisotope was established in Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung, in 1971. Afterwards, various facilities of radioisotope based examination and therapy services had emerged in many hospitals.
This year, TRIGA 2,000 reaches its 50th anniversary. Half a century of the reactor's operation is an important moment for the National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN) and Indonesia.
In this historical moment, BATAN researchers again gained an achievement in designing and producing the element of control shaft used in TRIGA 2,000 reactor. The reactor control shaft element for TRIGA type is no longer produced in General Atomic, USA. With the ability of producing the control shaft element, then most of the important components of TRIGA can be produced domestically.
In the efforts of informing the presence of TRIGA 2,000 Reactor, BATAN is holding the Nuclear R&D Technology Products Promotion in December 2-4, 2015. It is conducted so Bandung residents and its surroundings may see closely the nuclear reactor and the benefits of putting forward the nuclear knowledge and technology.
