Easy Ways to Secure Your WiFi Network

medcom.id, Jakarta: Wireless network, or known as WiFi has been an important part of the current interactive life. Not only on public spaces, wifi networks have been utilized in many homes as the practical and easy internet connector.
 
Unfortunately, only few are aware that wifi network is a vulnerable computer network model. It is mainly caused by the carelessness of the network clients by not protecting their wifi connections. Several basic loss of an unprotected wifi network are as follows:
 
-Increasing the monthly bill, especially if the fee is based on data transfer per byte.
-Lowering the Internet access speed as it is shared with other users.
-Security breach, as others would most likely be able to access the personal files in the personal computer through the wifi connection.

Then how do we protect our own wifi network? These are the basic steps to be applied in protecting our personal wifi network:
 
1. Open the Router Administrator Page
Firstly, it is important to understand how to access the wireless router settings. It is usually conducted by entering "193.168.1.1" into the web browser, as new username and password are to be inputted for the router. It varies on different routers, so it is advised to check the manual instruction included in the router package.
 
2. Make a Unique Password for the Router
After logging in to the router, the first thing to do is to change the original password of the router. It will prevent others from accessing the router and easily maintain the desired security settings. The password may be changed from the administration setting on the router's setting homepage.
 
3. Change the SSID Network's Name
SSID or the wifi network's name from the wireless router usually uses the gadget's name. Although it would not create vulnerability in the network, changing the SSID name is a good idea to inform others in knowing that they are connected with the network.
 
4. Activate Network Encryption
To prevent other computers in near proximity to use the Internet connection, the wireless signal needs to be encrypted. There are several encryption methods for wireless arrangements, such as WEP, WPA and WPA2. The most secure encryption is WPA2.
 
5. Filter MAC Address
Every electronic device, especially computers and gadgets have unique MAC addresses. The MAC address is listed within the router tool to prevent unregistered instruments from connecting to the router. (Eps)
