Surabaya: Naval ships from Russia's Pacific Fleet recently docked in Surabaya, Indonesia, as part of a joint naval exercise between the Russian and Indonesian navies.
The fleet includes diesel-electric submarines and surface vessels from the Ufa 636 project, specifically three corvettes—Gromki, Rezkii, and Aldar Tsydenzhapov—accompanied by the sea tanker Pechenga. Indonesia contributed two ships, the I Gusti Ngurah Rai - 332 and Frans Kaisiepo, along with an AC-565 helicopter to the first-ever Russian-Indonesian naval exercise, Orruda 2024.
The Russian Navy emphasized that this open exercise aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and poses no threat to any nation. The Indonesian military similarly highlighted the event as a collaborative maneuver between friendly countries, emphasizing its mutual benefits.
The name "Orruda" combines national symbols from both countries: Russia's "Oryol" (Eagle) and Indonesia's Garuda. The city of Surabaya, where the Russian ships are docked, holds historical ties to Russia, recalling the Soviet Union's support of Indonesian independence in the late 1940s.
In downtown Surabaya, the KRI Pasopati diesel submarine, a Soviet gift that helped combat Dutch colonial forces in Irian (now Papua), is preserved as a museum-monument. A commemorative plaque was added to the submarine last year, honoring the Soviet Union's contributions.
The Orruda 2024 exercises officially began on November 4, with senior naval officials and Russian diplomats present. Following coastal activities, the two-day sea phase will commence.
Last month, the same Russian ships also stopped at George Town in Malaysia's Penang province, where a ceremony honored the Russian vessel Zhemchug, which sank nearby in 1914.
