Fertility Rate in Indonesia Declining, Affecting Population Growth

Jakarta: Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in Indonesia has decreased to 2.1 from 2.7 over the past 10 years. This decline could affect population growth.

According to the dependency ratio, he said, the lower it is, the better, indicating the number of people needed to support others. For example, if the dependency rate is 100 percent, it means one young person is supporting their livelihood.

"Actually, if we have a comprehensive strategy to become a developed country, this fertility rate must be regulated because from the data I see, many are getting married late," said Budi in South Jakarta, Friday, March 8, 2024.

He cited China as an example, which once implemented the One Child Policy. This policy led to a decrease in the fertility rate. "Getting married late doesn't necessarily mean wanting to have children," he said.

In addition to the declining total fertility rate, the number of marriages in Indonesia is also decreasing, which is certainly related to the fertility rate.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) 2024 report, the number of marriages in Indonesia has decreased by up to 2 million. The highest decline was in West Java, decreasing by 29 thousand. Then, in Central Java, marriages decreased by 21 thousand, and in East Java by 13 thousand.

"A country that wants to become developed must know how to regulate its fertility rate. This way, the fertility rate is not excessively low, and the number of young or productive people in the population does not decrease," he concluded.
