Jakarta: President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo inspected the Manado-Bitung toll road project during his visit to North Sulawesi province on Friday.
"I have instructed Jasa Marga to quickly complete the project. I hope it can be completed by March or April," President Jokowi told reporters after the inspection.
"It can boost tourism. It can also support industries," President Jokowi noted.
President Jokowi started his working visit to North Sulawesi on Thursday morning. He inspected Sam Ratulangi International Airport and Tanjung Pulisan Special Economic Zone on the first day of the working visit.
Located 13 kilometers northeast of Manado, Sam Ratulangi international airport is the second busiest airport in the island of Sulawesi. The airport is also designated as one of the 11 main entry ports to Indonesia by Ministry of Tourism and Culture and serves as the main gateway to Bunaken National Marine Park, North Sulawesi’s major tourist destination.
Based on Ministry of Tourism’s press release, North Sulawesi is named as the Rising Star in tourism sector in Indonesia because the province can boost the performance of tourism sector by 600 percent in the past four years.
For the record, the number of foreign tourists visiting North Sulawesi, particularly Manado and Bitung reached 20,000 people in 2015, and the figure increased to 40,000 in 2016, 80,000 in 2017, and 120,000 in 2018.
