Yogyakarta: Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) will serve all domestic flights as of January 2020. International flights will be moved to the airport three months later.
General Manager of Airnav Indonesia's Yogyakarta Branch, Ratna Mustikaningsih revealed the transfer from Adisutjipto Airport to YIA will make supervision and management of airspace in Yogyakarta more efficient and effective.
"We note that there are at least 300 aircraft operations per day at Adisutjipto (Airport)," Ratna said in his office here on Thursday, October 16, 2019.
During this time, flights at Adisutjipto Airport often experienced landing delays. They must circle in the air because of the runway is too crowded.
Moreover, aside from serving civil aviation, Adisutjipto Airport has another role, namely as an Air Force airbase.
Later, when all domestic and international commercial flights are moved to Kulonprogo, Adisutjipto Airport will serve only military and propeller aircraft.
"Indeed, military flights should have a special airspace due to their movements. Therefore civilian and military flights should be separated," said Ratna.
