Jakarta: The death toll from Saturday's flashflood that swept through a number of areas in Jayapura regency of Papua province reached 77 as of Monday afternoon.
"As of Monday at 01:00 p.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB), at least 77 people were found dead and 74 people were injured," National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told a press conference this afternoon.
"In addition to that, as many as 43 people are still missing and 4,266 people have been evacuated," the BNPB spokesperson remarked.
The flashflood affected nine areas namely Dobonsolo, Hinekombe, Hobong, Ifale, Ifar Besar, Keheran, Sentani Kota, Sereh and Yobhe. The disaster damaged 561 houses, eight school buildings, three worship places, 104 shops, three bridges and eight drainage systems.
Sutopo has affirmed that the joint team will continue operations to find the missing. The BNPB official added that authorities will distribute humanitarian aid to the affected areas.
The local government has cooperated with related agencies to clean up mud and debris. The National Road Construction Workshop (BBPJN) XVII Jayapura has deployed heavy machines to repair national roads in Jayapura, Sentani and Kemiri.
