Jakarta: Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) leader Muhammad Rizieq Shibab today surrendered to police after the firebrand cleric was named a suspect for violations against covid-19 protocols.
Rizieq arrived at the Jakarta Metro Police headquarters at around 10.25 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). He was accompanied by FPI General Secretary Munarman and a number of aides.
"Today I am at the Jakarta Metro Police to undergo questioning," Rizieq told the waiting reporters before entering the building.
"Let's wait for the result of the examination," he stated.
Last month, Rizieq returned to Indonesia after nearly three years of self-proclaimed exile in Saudi Arabia. He participated in several crowded events right after his return. He also held his daughter's wedding in mid-November.
Besides Rizieq, police also named five more suspects in the case. All of them are the organizers of his daughter's wedding. The other five suspects are Haris Ubaidillah, Ali Bin Alwi Alatas, Maman Suryadi, Sobri Lubis and Idrus.
Early this week, police shot dead six Rizieq's supporters in a deadly shootout. The confrontation occurred at the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road area on Monday early morning. Rizieq repeatedly ignore police summons and hid in a secret location before the incident.
