New York: Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York, United States (US) strongly condemned the current situation in Lebanon. Where Israel launched an indiscriminate attack and resulted in more than 560 lives.
"Indonesia strongly condemns the Israeli attack on Lebanon which resulted in hundreds of civilian lives, including 50 children," said Foreign Minister Retno, quoted from the statement of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wednesday, September 25, 2024. "This attack further escalates the situation in the Middle East which is still facing a humanitarian crisis from Israel's aggression in Gaza," added the Foreign Minister.
"This violence and aggression must not become 'a new normal'," said Foreign Minister Retno.
Foreign Minister Retno further added that the UN Security Council (UNSC) and the international community must take firm steps to encourage de-escalation and stop the ongoing violence.
Indonesia also emphasized respect for the safety of UNIFIL peacekeepers in Lebanon. Currently, Indonesia has 1,232 personnel in UNIFIL.
In addition, the Indonesian Government through the Indonesian Embassy in Beirut also continues to monitor the condition of Indonesian citizens in Lebanon and has prepared contingency measures to anticipate emergency conditions.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the Palestinian people are the root of the conflict, and peace in the Middle East will never be achieved without justice for Palestine.
Israel has carried out a series of air strikes on Lebanon since Monday, September 23, claiming to be targeting Hezbollah. According to Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad, the death toll from the attack reached 560 people, including 95 women and 50 children. Meanwhile, 1,835 were reported injured in this attack.
