Jakarta: Indonesian President Joko Widodo has ensured that Indonesia will continue to strengthen its downstream industry. According to him, the Indonesian government will start to ban exports of bauxite ores on June 1, 2023.

"Starting in June 2023, the government will impose a ban on bauxite ore exports and encourage domestic bauxite processing and refining businesses," President Jokowi said at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday, December 21, 2022.

He believes that strengthening of the country's downstream industry is a step that must be taken in order to create a better national economy. This effort is also needed to provide better welfare for all Indonesian people.

The Head of State cited Indonesia's trade performance after banning nickel ore exports. This year, the value of nickel exports increased to US30 billion from only USD 1.1 billion.

"That's what we didn't get for decades. We didn't get taxes. We didn't get dividends. We didn't get royalties. We didn't get export revenues either. We didn't get job creation either. We didn't get anything. That must be stopped," said the former mayor of Surakarta.

Even though Indonesia will later be sued by the international community because of this policy, President Jokowi will remain defiant. In fact, he challenged countries to file lawsuits.

"It's okay. Just keep suing us. When the second lawsuit has not been concluded yet, we will announce the third (ban). Just sue us again. it's okay," he said.
