Jakarta: At least three people were killed after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Ambon, Maluku on Thursday morning.
"Three people were killed. Other three were injured," National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Agus Wibowo said here on Thursday, September 26, 2019.
According to the BNPB official, the dead victims were buried beneath rubble. In the meantime, the injured victims have been evacuated to nearest health centers.
One injured victim was brought to Al Aqsa hospital. Another injured victim was treated at Air Besar Public Health Center.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the 6.8 magnitude eathquake shook Ambon and its nearby areas at 06.48 AM Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The epicenter of the earthquake was located 40 kilometers northwest of Ambon.
The earthquake did not trigger tsunami warnings. Nevertheless, the strong quake caused panic in Ambon.
