Jakarta: Former President Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie passed away at the age of 83 at the Gatot Soebroto Central Army Hospital in Central Jakarta at 06:05 PM Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on Wednesday, September 11, 2019.
"My father, BJ Habibie, passed away at 06:05 PM on Wednesday, September 11, 2019," Habibie's son, Thareq Kemal Habibie, told reporters this evening.
Habibie was born in Pare Pare, South Sulawesi on June 25, 1936. He was the fourth child in a family of eight children.
Habibie was the third President of Indonesia. He led the country from May 1998 to October 1999.
Habibie is widely known as the pioneer of the Indonesian aviation industry. He is also considered as a clean and respectable figure.
Habibie supervised the country's first democratic general elections after the fall of New Order era. He approved the East Timorese independence referendum in 1999.
