Jakarta: Head of the Committee for Covid-19 Handling and National Economic Recovery (KPCPEN) and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir has said that the Red and White Vaccine is expected to be able to be mass produced in 2022.
"The clinical trial will be conducted next year so the vaccine can be mass produced in 2022," Erick said here on Friday.
Red and White Vaccine is the name of the locally-produced coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19) vaccine. It is currently being developed by Eijkman Institute and other related institutions. Eijkman Institute is targeted to complete animal trials by the end of this year.
"So we will not be dependent on covid-19 vaccine from overseas," Erick said.
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has recently established a team to accelerate covid-19 vaccine development through Presidential Decree (Keppres) Number 18 of 2020.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has been appointed to chair the team’s steering committee, while Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy and Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD have been appointed as members of the team.
Meanwhile, Minister of Research and Technology and National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Bambang Brodjonegoro is in charge of the development of a potential vaccine with the assistance of Minister of Health Terawan Agus Putranto and Minister for State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir.
In addition, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang, Head of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) Penny Lukito, and other elements of government have been also appointed to join the team.
"So we will not be dependent on covid-19 vaccine from overseas," Erick said.
