13 May 2019 13:58
Tanjung Selor: Heavy rains in the Sajau River upstream area in Giram Batu Tulis, Berau, East Kalimantan triggered flash floods that swamped three villages in Tanjung Palas Timur, Bulungan, North Kalimantan on Sunday.

Sajau Metun, Tanjung Agung, and Wonomulyo were the three villages affected by the flooding, Pandi, the North Kalimantan disaster mitigation office (BPBD) head, remarked here, on Sunday.

Flooding started at dawn, and the flood waters kept spreading to wider areas, Yamin, a resident of Tanjung Agung SP 4, revealed.

Residential areas in the three villages were inundated by flood waters reaching heights of between 50 and 80 centimeters.

The flooding was triggered by continual heavy downpours and the conversion of forest land into palm oil plantation, Yamin noted.

Indonesia is blessed with fertile soil and various natural resources, but concurrently, the country is prone to natural disasters, as it is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, where numerous volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.
