Prabowo Propose Indonesia Ready to Send Peacekeepers to Gaza, Is It Feaseble?

Singapore: Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto has said that Indonesia is ready to send peacekeepers to enforce the ceasefire in Gaza if needed.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Asia's premier security conference on Saturday, June 1, 2024, Prabowo said US President Joe Biden's three-phase proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza was a step in the right direction.

"If needed and requested by the UN, we are ready to contribute significant peacekeeping forces to maintain and monitor this prospective ceasefire and provide protection and security to all parties and all parties," Prabowo said, as quoted by Channel News Asia.

The current Indonesian Defense Minister will take office as president in October. He added that President Joko Widodo had ordered him to announce that Indonesia was also ready “to evacuate, receive and treat up to 1,000 patients from Gaza”.

The Indonesian Hospital in Gaza, run by an Indonesian non-governmental organisation (NGO), was closed in November amid ongoing fighting between Israel and Hamas.

Prabowo said a thorough investigation into the humanitarian disaster in the Rafah area of ??Gaza was needed, as well as a “fair solution” to the conflict.

“And that means not only Israel’s right to exist, but also the right of the Palestinian people to have their own homeland, their own country and live in peace,” Prabowo concluded.

Bold proposal

Professor of International Law at the University of Indonesia, Hikmahanto Juwana, in his statement said that Prabowo stating that Indonesia is ready to send peacekeeping troops to maintain the ceasefire, is a concrete and bold proposal. The troop deployment will be carried out if approved by Israel and Hamas.

"Concrete because while many countries have not thought about it, Prabowo has conveyed it after President Biden conveyed the proposal for an Israel-Hamas ceasefire," said Professor Hikmahanto.

"However, the formation of the Peacekeeping Force must await a resolution from the UN Security Council," said Hikmahanto.

Meanwhile, Prabowo's proposal is considered bold because the attacks by Israel on Gaza, Palestine have been very intense and massive. It is not impossible that if there is a violation of the ceasefire, the UN peacekeeping forces from Indonesia will be under the intense and massive flames of war.

The Indonesian soldiers, if evacuated, will need time and face various obstacles.

"Maybe no country will be as brave as Indonesia considering that the Israeli attacks on Gaza are beyond the limits of humanity," stated Hikmahanto.
