Prabowo Enhances Indonesia's Global Presence

Jakarta: President Prabowo Subianto is set to make his first state visits after his inauguration, with plans to visit several influential countries, including China and the United States. Yon Machmudi, an international relations expert from the University of Indonesia, noted that Prabowo is focused on elevating Indonesia’s global presence.

“This intention is clear from the numerous visits scheduled shortly after the election and inauguration,” Yon shared with Medcom.id on Thursday, October 31, 2024. Unlike Joko Widodo, who concentrated on domestic issues, Prabowo appears to aim at positioning Indonesia’s interests internationally.

“Prabowo seems determined to assert Indonesia’s place on the world stage, choosing visits to superpower nations such as China, followed by the US, and later the UK,” Yon added.

It’s also anticipated that Prabowo will visit Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt directly. “These influential nations are not likely to be overlooked,” Yon remarked.

Yon interpreted Prabowo's diplomatic moves as a strategic effort to elevate Indonesia’s standing globally.

“In light of dynamic global events, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and regional tensions triggered by Israel’s actions, Indonesia cannot remain passive; its position in the international arena needs to be clear,” he explained.

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi previously announced Prabowo’s upcoming overseas trips next month, with key events such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit and the G20 Summit on the agenda. The APEC Summit will take place in Peru from November 13-16, 2024, while the G20 Summit is scheduled for November 14-16, 2024, in Brazil.
