Palangka Raya: The Palangka Raya Education Agency instructed local schools to shorten class time as air quality in Central Kalimantan's capital and nearby areas worsened to hazardous level.
"The decision is based on a recommendation from the Central Kalimantan Education Agency. The start of study time will be moved from 06:30 AM to 07:00 AM," Palangka Raya Education Agency head Sahdin Hasan told reporters here on Monday.
According to the offical, the duration of teaching period for elementary schools will be reduced from 30 minutes to 25 minutes. Meanwhile, the duration of teaching period for junior high schools will be reduced from 40 minutes to 30 minutes.
"Schools are also instructed to not hold flag ceremony and outdoor physical training," Sahdin said.
The official explained that the deteroriating air quality can harm students' health. He warned that haze can cause acute respiratory infections.
"We haven't decided to close schools. Hopefully the air quality will improve soon," Sahdin said.
Palangkarya's Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 349 recentlu. Severe air pollution can
