Palu: President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has asked the private sector to help construct permanent housing in Palu, Central Sulawesi.
The capital of Central Sulawesi province was strucked by a massive earthquake last year.
"I think a model must be developed so that the government and the private sector can work together in the event of a disaster," Jokowi said in Mantikurore, Palu, Central Sulawesi on Tuesday, October 29, 2019.
Jokowi inspected the construction of permanent housing conducted by Tzu Chi Foundation in Tondo. He was accompanied by the leader of the foundation, Sugianto Kusuma.
"There are 1,500 houses that will be completed before Lebaran. A total of 3,000 houses (will be built)," he said.
Jokowi previously inspected the construction of permanent housing in Duyu, Tatanga, Palu. Jokowi admitted that the reconstruction processs is not easy.
However, he believes the construction of permanent housing in Palu and Donggala can be completed by the end of 2020.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head Doni Monardo said 11,643 houses are built as part of the agency's relocation program. Majority of the houses are built by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing with as many as 8,788 units. It is followed by AHA Center with 75 units, Mayapada Foundation with 100 units, and Tzu Chi Foundation with 2,500 units.
