Jakarta: Indonesian citizens (WNI) returning from Afghanistan were apparently escorted by the Taliban to the airport. This was stated by the Director General of Asia Pacific and Africa, Abdul Kadir Jailani.
He said the Taliban escorted the Indonesian citizens to Kabul airport, before they were taken over by them.
Kadir said this happened because of diplomatic communication between Indonesia and the Taliban. He said he had met with the Taliban on August 13 last.
"This request was fulfilled positively by the Taliban. And they immediately provided escort to the Indonesian Embassy," said Kadir during a virtual discussion at the Center for Dialogue and Cooperation Among Civilization (CDCC), Friday, September 3, 2021.
The Taliban also participated in escorting the evacuation of 26 Indonesian citizens and several foreign nationals who were about to be evacuated to the airport.
"The trip from the Indonesian Embassy to the airport was supposed to be 25 minutes, but it took five hours because of the conditions in Kabul at that time," he explained.
Luckily all Indonesian citizens in Afghanistan can be returned safely. He said all these things could happen because there was communication with the Taliban.
The Taliban took control of the city of Kabul on August 15, 2021. They entered Kabul without any significant resistance.
