Livestock from Gunungkidul Residents Test Positive for Anthrax, Vaccination Prepared

Yogyakarta: One of the resident goats in Kayoman Hamlet, Serut Village, Kapanewon Gedangsari, Gunungkidul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) tested positive for anthrax. These results were obtained after testing several livestock in the area that were previously suspected to have died from the disease.
 
"One livestock belonging to S had a positive blood sample taken for anthrax. It is suspected that the other livestock (2 animals) were the same," said Head of the Gunungkidul Regency Animal Husbandry and Health Service, Wibawanti Wulandari, when contacted, Tuesday, March 12 2024.
 
A number of goats were previously tested or samples were taken and studied at the Wates Veterinary Besat Center (BB Vet) laboratory, Kulon Progo Regency. The livestock tested died on March 7, 2024.

"The livestock that died were 1 cow and two goats. There was goat meat which was also consumed," he explained.
 
He said the test results of the next two livestock were still awaited. According to him, whatever the results are, it will not affect the actions taken by the institution.
 
Wibawanti explained that his party had given antibiotics and multivitamins to 86 cows and 175 goats in the area. Apart from that, it also provides education by distributing Communication, Information and Education (KIE) to residents.
 
"Actually, we have done that because the indications have pointed to (anthrax) while yesterday we were waiting for the results. We have done that. IEC was given to around 50 people," he said.
 
He added that a coordination meeting had been scheduled for Wednesday, March 13 2024 to address this case. The meeting will be held in Yogyakarta with BB Vet Wates and a number of institutions with an interest in handling the case.

Vaccination

The Animal Health Service of Gunungkidul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), is preparing vaccination measures to anticipate exposure to anthrax that occurred in Kayoman Hamlet, Serut Village, Gedangsari District. This effort is aimed at anticipating the spread of the disease.
 
"After that, we will fast, for two weeks we will vaccinate against anthrax. Vaccination will be gradual," said Head of the Gunungkidul Regency Animal Husbandry and Health Service, Wibawanti Wulandari, Wednesday, March 13 2024.
 
The vaccination was aimed at hundreds of livestock located around the location of the anthrax case. The details are 86 cows and 175 goats.
 
"The livestock that will be the target of this vaccine, which have been given antibiotics, are 86 cows and 175 goats," he said.
 
Currently, he continued, efforts to protect livestock can only be done by administering antibiotics and multivitamins. Meanwhile, the results of laboratory tests on 2 livestock at the Veterinary Center (BB Vet) did not affect actions in the field.
