Jakarta: The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of South Sumatra has said that 10 regions in the province are prone to wildfires this year.
"The number is the same with last year," the South Sumatra BPBD Emergency Mitigation Division Head Ansori said here on Monday.
The regions are Ogan Ilir, Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI), Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU), East OKU, Musi Banyuasin, Banyuasin, Muara Enim, Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir (PALI), Musi Rawas, and North Musi Rawas.
According to the South Sumatra BPBD official, fires gutted 946.33 hectares of land in the province in 2020.
To prevent wildfires in the province this year, local authorities is planning to begin weather modification activities next month.
"Weather modification is an effective method to fight wildfires," Ansori stated.
