Jakarta: A landslide that occurred in Sorong City in West Papua Province on Wednesday resulted in the death of two residents.
According to the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of West Papua Province, the landslide also damaged one house.
"This landslide disaster was accompanied by flooding that hit three areas," said the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Raditya Jati in a press release on Thursday.
"The natural diasters were triggered by rain with moderate to high intensity on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, at 16.00 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT)," the spokesman stated.
Responding to this incident, the BPBD's Rapid Response Team (TRC) coordinated with the National SAR Agency (Basarnas), the National Armed Forces (TNI) and the National Police (Polri) and other relevant institutions for evacuating affected residents.
In addition, The BPBD of Sorong City has appealed to people who live near landslide-prone locations to always be alert and alert to anticipate similar incidents.
