Jakarta: Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that ASEAN has great capital to become the centre of growth or epicentrum of growth. However, to realize this, the President emphasized the importance of ASEAN countries to work more compactly and agilely.
This was conveyed by the President when opening the Plenary Session of the 43rd ASEAN Summit, at the Jakarta Convention Centre (JCC), Tuesday 4 September 2023.
"ASEAN's direction is clearly the epicentrum of growth. ASEAN has great capital to achieve it, but ASEAN must be able to work harder, more united, bolder, and more agile," he said.
In addition, continued the President, ASEAN also needs to formulate relevant long-term strategies. Therefore, the President appreciated the support of ASEAN countries in the discussion of ASEAN Concord IV which will be the foundation for the preparation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
"ASEAN also needs a long-term tactical strategy that is relevant and in accordance with people's expectations, which is not only for the next five years but next 20 years until 2045," said the President.
In addition, the President also underlined the importance of ASEAN to strengthen inclusive cooperation and collaboration between ASEAN countries and partners in the Indo-Pacific region so as to make ASEAN the epicentrum of growth. The cooperation is carried out, among others, through the cooperation of the ASEAN Secretariat with the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat (PIF) and the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) as well as economic and development approaches through the ASEAN Indo-Pacific Forum (AIPF) so that ASEAN can have an impact on its people and also for the world.
