Jakarta: Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD has announced that Islamic Defenders Front is a banned organization.

"(FPI) does not have legal standing," said the former Constitutional Court (MK) chief justice in a press conference here on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Mahfud, de jure, FPI has been disbanded as a mass organization since June 20, 2019. However, its members continued to carry out activities such as acts of sweeping and provocation.

Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej stressed that FPI members are no longer allowed to carry out any activities. He revealed that the decision was jointly taken by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, the Attorney General's Office (AGO), the Ministry of Home Affairs, the National Police (Polri), and the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT).

"If they still carry out activities, authorities will stop them," Edward stated.

Established by firebrand cleric Rizieq Shihab in 1998, FPI is an Indonesian hardline Islamist organization. Rizieq returned from three years of self-exile in Saudi Arabia last month.

After the return of Rizieq, FPI was involved in several controversial incidents. The organization held several crowd-pulling events in Greater Jakarta area when the covid-19 situation was worsening in the region.

Early this month. Police shot dead six of Rizieq's supporters for allegedly shooting at undercover police officers. Rizieq was recently named as a suspect for violating health protocols
