Jakarta: Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan tried the bicycle lane from Rawamangun Velodrome to City Hall. He joined a trial run for cyclists in the capital.

"This is the first 23 kilometers that we have built, the majority of roads in Jakarta will have bicycle lanes," Anies said in Jakarta, Friday, September 20, 2019.

The corridor route passes Jalan Pramuka, Matraman, Jalan Proklamasi, Jalan Diponegoro and Jalan Imam Bonjol. Anies' group stopped briefly under the Dukuh Atas flyover and continued on to City Hall via Jalan Thamrin.

Looking ahead, special bicycle lanes will be designed in several streets in the capital city. Motor vehicles will be given a fine if they go through the special bicycle lanes..

"There will be 63 kilometers of bicycle paths in the initial phase," Anies said.

According to him, the bicycle lanes are mirroring the example of other countries.  In addition, it is expected to encourage the use of bicycles.

"A bicycle is not only meant for sport. But a bicycle can be used for transportation," Anies explained.
