Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has decided to ban the annual Eid-al-Fitr exodus in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
The exodus is known in Indonesia as mudik. Millions of people leave urban areas to their hometowns during Eid-al-Fitr holiday.
"We have banned civil servants, military officers and police officers from participating in the annual mudik last week. We decided to ban all people from partipating in the annual mudik during today's meeting," the former Jakarta governor said here on Tuesday, April 21, 2020.
As of Monday noon, April 20, 2020, the National Task Force for Acceleration of Covid-19 Response has recorded 6,760 confirmed covid-19 cases, 747 recoveries and 540 deaths.
According to a recent survey from Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC), around 30 percent of Jakartans are still eager to participate in the annual mudik. Jakarta is the epicenter of covid-19 outbreak in Indonesia. The province and its satellite cities have implemented large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) since early April.
"We need to distribute aid so people will not try to return to their hometowns. We will also limit public transportation services," Jokowi stated.
