Bandung: The forest around the summit of Mount Malabar in Bandung regency caught fire on Saturday, October 5, 2019. The operation to douse the fire is still ongoing as of now.
South Bandung Forest Unit Adminstrator Tedy Sumarto said the operation is carried out by the TNI, Polri, Bandung Regency BPBD, and volunteers. He revealed that it is done by making a trench around the affected area.
"Efforts to extinguish the fire have been carried out since Sunday night. Due to the topography and the location of the fire, It had to be done manually. Because of the steep terrain, extinguishing the flame was carried out by making a trench around the peak," Tedy told Medcom.id on Monday, October 7, 2019.
Tedy said the burning trees are classified as reed trees. He said his team is still studying the cause of the fire.
"Mostly reeds. There are also some Calliandra trees. We are still investigating the cause of the fire," he said.
The burned area, said Tedy, reached 26 hectares. Making trenches is done so that the fire does not spread.
"The area that burned reached 26 hectares, now we have minimized it so that it does not expand. Officers also carry equipment such as hoes and machetes to sort dry branches so they do not catch fire," said Tedy.
