Jakarta: The death toll of Friday's strong earthquake in Majene Regency has risen to at least eight, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said on Friday afternoon.
"According to the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Majene Regency, at least eight people were killed and more than 600 others injured," BNPB spokesperson Raditya Jati said in a press release.
"Around 15 thousand people were forced to flee their homes," the BNPB official stated.
At around 01.28 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Majene Regency and its nearby regions in West Sulawesi Province.
With a depth of 10 kilometers, the epicenter of the earthquake was located six kilometers northeast of Majene.
In Mamuju Regency, the earthquake heavily damaged many buildings, including Hotel Maleo and West Sulawesi Governor's Office.
A day earlier, the same area was struck by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake.
