Pekanbaru: Flooding due to overflowing rivers in Riau submerges five districts namely Rokan Hulu, Kampar, Kuantan Singingi, and Pelalawan. Water is expected to continue to soak residents' houses as rainfall is still high in Riau.
"So far, residents who have been affected by the flood have been evacuated to safe locations and given assistance by the local joint team," said Riau Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Edwar Sanger, in Pekanbaru on Sunday, December 15, 2019.
Edwar explained, the joint team consisting of BPBD, Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), National Police (Polri), Tagana, the Health Service, and Social Services continue to work to overcome the effects of the flood. In fact, aid for flood victims in Kampar was immediately distributed not long after the tributary of the Kampar river overflowed.
"Emergency posts and public kitchens have been established by the local BPBD. We will continue to coordinate monitoring the development of floods," he explained.
Meanwhile, flooding in Kampar began to occur since the management of the Koto Panjang Hydroelectric power plant (PLTA) decided to open five gates to their hydro-power reservoir. As a result there has been an increase in the elevation of the Kampar River watershed at around 30-60 centimeters.
"We continue to appeal to the people in the Kampar watershed to be aware of flooding as a result of opening the door to the overflow of water," said Acting Manager of the Koto Panjang Cecep Hydroelectric Power Plant Sofhan Munwar.
Floods in Riau have caused two deaths. The two victims who were toddlers respectively Citra Ayu Nurlina, 4, residents of Pelanduk Hamlet, Koto Lama Village, Kunto Darussalam District, Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau, and Irzan Putra Loka, 2, residents of Kayu Batu Hamlet, Talontam Village, Benai District , Kuantan Singingi Regency, Riau.
While in Rokan Hulu, floods have occurred in seven districts namely Rambah, Rokan IV Koto, Ujung Batu, Pagaran Tapah, Kunto Darussalam, Rambah Hilir, and Bonai Darussalam. In Rambah there was an overflow of the Pawan River, precisely in the village of Rambah Tengah Hulu, which made the residents' settlements flooded.
In addition, in the village of Babussalam floods began to inundate residents' homes. Similar conditions also occur in Pematang Berangan Village, which is now flooded with a height of about 25-45 centimeters in residential homes.
The current condition of flood water still persists and has not subsided significantly. Flooding is also known to hit as an area in Kampar Kiri and Mount Sahilan, Kampar.
