Jakarta: Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian today proposed the voting day of the 2024 general and presidential elections to be held in April or May.

Previously, the General Elections Commissons (KPU) said that it wants to move forward the election schedule to February.

"We propose the voting day to be held in April. It is similar with previous general elections. If posibble, it can also be held in May," Tito told the members of the Indonesian parliament here on Thursday.

According to the Home Affairs Minister, holding the general elections in April or May would be more efficient. Moreover, changing the election schedule would affect central and local governments. It would also create political instability and increase security risks.

"It would affects government programs at the national and local levels," the former National Police (Polri) chief stated.

Nevertheless, the Indonesian government agreed with KPU's proposal to hold the 2024 regional elections on November 27 of the year.

"It is still in line with the law," he stated.
