Yogyakarta: The Ministry of Research and Technology will intensify research on the application of disaster relief technologies this year. This is done in an effort to reduce the impacts of disasters.
"We will make disaster a research priority," said Head of the National Innovation Research Agency (BRIN) Bambang Brodjonegoro, in Yogyakarta on Tuesday, January 8, 2020.
According to Bambang, the amount of research in disaster mitigation is still minimal. The majority of existing studies have only covered the impacts of catastrophic forest fires and floods.
"For example, weather modification technology for land fires yesterday," he said.
Bambang said the weather modification technology can also be used to reduce the impacts of flooding. In addition, studies have also been established to minimize the risks of tsunami.
"The government has put an early warning system (EWS) on 16 areas that are prone to potential tsunamis," he said.
The EWS will notify the watch tower signal if a tsunami wave occurs. "So that officials can immediately tell residents to evacuate before the tsunami reaches the land," explained Bambang.
