Jakarta: President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo with the Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud) Nadiem Makarim will discuss whether the latter needs to be assisted by a deputy minister.
However, the issue will not be decided soon.
"Until now the president has not yet decided. He will definitely talk to the Minister of Education and Culture,"said Minister of State Secretary, Pratikno in Jakarta on Monday, November 4, 2019.
According to him, Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 72 of 2019 concerning the Ministry of Education and Culture mentions the responsibilities and duties of a deputy minister of education and culture. However, it does not mean the position must be filled.
"There is a position, but that does not mean it must always be filled. But if needed, of course, it will be filled," he explained.
There are 12 deputy ministers in the Indonesia Onward Cabinet. However, of the 12 names, there was no deputy minister for the education sector, even though several academics and education activists considered this sector to have the greatest urgency to have one.
"In my opinion, the presence of a deputy minister in the ministry of education and culture is very urgent," said Education Observer from Paramadina University, Mohammad Abduhzen when contacted by Medcom.id on Tuesday, October 29, 2019.
The body that oversees primary, secondary and higher education cannot just be controlled by only one figure. Nadiem is not an academic or from the education sector. He does not yet have the operational, practical or theoretical experience.
