Makassar: Australia and Indonesia jointly launched a new bilateral research and university collaboration for Sulawesi through the Partnership for Australia Indonesia Research (PAIR).

The program was launched by Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Penny Williams PSM and senior representative from the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Professor Faiz Syuaib on 30 May 2024.

This innovative collaboration marks a substantial leap forward for the research partnership between Australia and Indonesia, with both governments investing on an equal basis.

“I am pleased to launch this initiative which brings Australia and Indonesia together to address shared challenges,” said Ambassador Williams, quoted from the Embassy Statement.

“Our previous collaborations through PAIR South Sulawesi built a strong foundation for developing evidence-informed policies. Now, we are expanding operations across Sulawesi,” she added.

PAIR aims to bridge the gap between research and policy, bringing researchers together with policy makers and community groups to improve policy outcomes. Through PAIR, leading Australian and Indonesian researchers work with governments to investigate shared concerns, such as climate change and the development of renewable energy.

“This initiative will lay the foundation for the transfer of knowledge to policy. It will ensure that research conducted by Indonesian higher education institutions has a broader and more profound impact on society through local solutions to address local challenges,” said Professor Faiz Syuaib.

PAIR Sulawesi is an initiative of the Australia Indonesia Centre (AIC), a consortium of leading research universities in both countries. PAIR Sulawesi builds on the AIC mission to advance people-to-people links in science, technology, education, innovation, and culture. The AIC lead agency is Monash University. The anchor institution for PAIR Sulawesi is Universitas Hasanuddin.
