Jakarta: The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Head Suhardi Alius revealed that dozens of Indonesian citizens have been arrested at the border between Syria and Turkey.
“They have failed in Syria so they want to carry out operations back home," Suhardi on Monday, November 11, 2019.
According to him, BNPT cannot work alone. As a result, the agency has requested assistance from the Special Detachment 88 Anti-Terror (Densus 88) of the National Police.
“BNPT is not in charge of law enforcement. It provides intelligence to the Densus 88," said Suhardi.
On Monday, Suhardi held a hearing with the members of the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission III to discuss BNPT's activities. During the meeting, he mentioned about BNPT's intelligence programs to supervise suspicious content on social media.
Suhardi cited the case of the stabbing of the ex-coordinating minister for politics, law and
security, Wiranto, as an example. He said that the perpetrator of the stabbing, Syahril Alamsyah, may watch radical content on social media.
“BNPT has been carrying out preemptive, mitigation and intelligence actions," he said. (Translator: Muhammad Gestinev)
