Jakarta: President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo opened the National Coordination Meeting of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

In his welcoming remarks, President Jokowi reminded that Indonesia sits on the geologically active Pacific Ring of Fire. He warned that the country can be hit by disasters anytime.

In addition, President Jokowi said that BMKG, government agencies and local leaders must strengthen disaster mitigation cooperation. He believes that early warning systems and disaster education programs are needed to reduce risks.

"All stakeholders must increase their awareness. We must be able to anticipate disasters," he said.

"If we develop early warning systems in disaster-prone areas, we will be able to minimize risks," he added.

In March, President Jokowi insructed regional heads to pay attention to disaster risk reduction for development planning in their areas.

President Jokowi added that the involvement of academics and disaster experts in each region is important in reviewing and analyzing potential disasters, predicting the threats, and providing public education on disaster awareness.

President Jokowi also instructed regional leaders to build and develop an integrated early warning system in the central and regional governments and to provide disaster preparedness training that involves religious leaders, traditional leaders, community leaders, youth leaders and all elements of society.
