Jakarta: 6 Supporters of Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) founder M Rizieq Shihab were killed in a shootout with police on Monday early morning.

According to the Jakarta Metro Police Head Inspector General M Fadil Imran, the confrontation occured at the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road area at around 00.30 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

"Our personnel's vehicle was attacked with firearms and sharp weapons," the Jakarta Metro Police head said in a press conference on Monday afternoon.

"Out of 10 followers, six of them were shot dead," the police official stated.

The Jakarta Metro Police plans to question the firebrand cleric over violations of covid-19 restrictions during the wedding party of Rizieq's daughter.

In early November, thousands of Rizieq's supporters also gathered at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport when the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) leader returned to Indonesia after nearly three years of self-proclaimed exile in Saudi Arabia.
