Jakarta: A suspected bomb explosion occurred in the North Sumatra city of Sibolga this afternoon when police tried to arrest a suspected terrorist at his house.
The man is only identified with the initials AH. He lives in a residential area in Pancuran Bambu district.
"We are still investigating the suspected bomb explosion," National Police spokesperson Inspector General Police M Iqbal told Primetime News Metro TV on Tuesday.
Last week, the National Police Special Detachment 88 Anti-Terror (Densus 88) nabbed two suspected terrorists. According to authorities, Densus 88 caught the two terror suspects separately in Lampung and West Kalimantan.
The two terror suspects are only identified with their initials R and P. They are reportedly members of Jamaah Ansharud Daulah (JAD) terror group.
According to the police spokesperson, R was arrested in Lampung province on Saturday. In the meantime, P was arrested in West Kalimantan a day later.
During an interogation, R revealed his plan to attack Lampung Police headquarters and police stations in Jakarta. On the other hand, P allegedly planned to carry out terror attacks against police officers.
"This is part of our efforts to minimize terror threats ahead of the upcoming simultaneous general and presidential elections," National Police spokesperson Brigadier General Police Dedi Prasetyo told the press on Monday.
Indonesia will hold its first ever simultaneous general and presidential elections on April 17. Voters will elect the president, vice president as well as members of national and local legislative bodies on the same day.
According to the official data, as many as 192 million people will be eligible to vote this year. In addition to that, around 800 thousand polling stations will be opened on the voting day.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) will hold five presidential election debates until April 17. All the presidential debates will be staged in the capital city of Jakarta.
