Jakarta: The Ministry of Defense (Kemenhan) has asked the House of Representatives (DPR) to increase its budget to improve the country's weaponry. The budget of IDR 131.2 trillion in 2020 is considered insufficient.

"The Minister of Defense (Prabowo Subianto) is trying so that the DPR can continue to increase the budget, specifically for defense equipment spending," Prabowo’s spokesman Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak told Medcom.id on Tuesday, January 14, 2019.

Prabowo will focus on strengthening Indonesia's defense. The former Commander of the Special Forces Command (Kopassus) wants to modernize and acquire the latest in defense equipment.

"Especially warships and submarines, including coast guard ships equipped with good and proper weapon systems," said Dahnil.

Prabowo briefly revealed the Ministry of Defense's budget allocation. The General Chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) said that 70 percent of the budget will be used for operations and employee salaries. The remaining budget is for defense equipment.

However, he explained, the budget for defense equipment was too small compared to other countries in Southeast Asia. "Greater funding is expected so that Indonesia's defense and security tools will be more advanced and competitive," Prabowo said, Jakarta on Tuesday, December 3, 2019.
