Jakarta: The member of the Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sukamta criticized President Joko Widodo’s decision to revive the post of military commander.
“The decision is not in line with the law on the Armed Forces," Sukamta said here on Thursday, November 7, 2019.
“Presidential decree should be in line with the law while the law should be in line with our constitution.” He said.
The post of the military deputy-commander was abolished during the era of former president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid. Sukamta questioned the President’s reason to revive the post.

According to the presidential decree, a deputy TNI commander is tasked to assist the military commander and to advise the military commander on the implementation of the national defense policy, the development of Armed Forces’ size, the development of military doctrine and military strategy and the management of Armed Forces' strength
In addition, the deputy commander will take over the commander’s main duties if the commander is unable to carry out his or her duties. (Translator: Muhammad Gestinev)
