Makassar: The death toll of Friday's strong earthquake that hit West Sulawesi Province has risen to 88, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said on Tuesday.
"77 dead victims are from Mamuju Regency, while 11 others are from Majene Regecny," Makassar City Basarnas spokesperson, Hamsidar, told reporters.
According to the official, the earthquake also injured more than 900 people and displaced thousands of local residents.
A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 occurred in West Sulawesi Province on Friday at 1.28 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
The epicenter was located at 2.98 South Latitude and 118.94 East Longitude or 6 kilometers northeast of Majene Regency.
According to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake was a type of shallow earthquake that occurred due to local fault activity.
Meanwhile, heavy damages have been reported by Majene and Mamuju regencies, including the Governor’s office, two hospitals, 25 schools, two hotels, a minimarket, a community health centre, Mamuju Seaport, a bridge and a military office.
