Jakarta: The Indonesian and Turkey governments have agreed to increase the diplomatic capacity between the two countries. This increase was agreed upon through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding or MoU at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 22, 2020.
"This Memorandum of Understanding will strengthen our partnership, and also increase the diplomatic capacity of the two countries," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in a joint statement with Turkey Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.
The signing of the MoU comes at a time when Indonesia and Turkey commemorate 70 years of diplomatic relations.
"This means we will strengthen cooperation between the two foreign ministries, including training and diplomatic exchanges," said Foreign Minister Mevlut.
In addition to agreeing to increase diplomatic capacity, both Foreign Ministers Retno and Mevlut have an open and productive dialogue on various matters.
Regarding bilateral cooperation, the two foreign ministers agreed to continue the Indonesia-Turkey Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IT-CEPA) negotiations, with the hope that it will be completed in 2021 as mandated by President Jokowi and Erdogan.
IT-CEPA has the potential to increase bilateral trade between Indonesia and Turkey. This will also demonstrate Indonesia's commitment to an open, fair and free multilateral trading system and joint efforts to support post-pandemic economic recovery.
The two foreign ministers also discussed the investment sector. Foreign Minister Retno said the interest of Turkish investors was increasing in Indonesia, especially in several projects such as shipping, agriculture and infrastructure.
"I also conveyed to the Foreign Minister about the recently enacted Job Creation Law, which I believe can create an investment climate that is increasingly conducive to Turkey investment in Indonesia," said Foreign Minister Retno.
"In particular, I also highlighted the importance of Turkey-Indonesian cooperation, especially in infrastructure projects in Indonesia under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) scheme," she added.
Regarding investment, Foreign Minister Mevlut confirmed that many Turkey companies are interested in investing in Indonesia in various fields, including infrastructure. He said that the quality of products from Turkey was guaranteed quality, and the prices were also competitive with other countries.
Regarding technology and industrial cooperation, since last June, intensive talks have been initiated by the two countries to cooperate in the fields of the aerospace industry, electric cars, rocket launching sites (spaceport building), satellites and satellite launch vehicles as well as medical and pharmaceutical technology.
Indonesia also noted the involvement eight of its experts in a team that discovered 320 billion cubic meters of natural gas reserves off the coast of the Black Sea in Turkey in August this year.
"And as a country with long experience in the gas industry, I convey to the Turkish Foreign Minister the readiness of Indonesian State Owned Enterprises to cooperate and help develop the gas industry in Turkey," said Foreign Minister Retno.
