Authorities Record Six Avalanche Earthquakes from Mount Merapi

Yogyakarta: The observation post detected six avalanche earthquakes from Mount Merapi during a six-hour duration, starting midnight until 6 a.m. local time on Thursday, the Geology Disaster Technology Development and Research Center (BPPTKG) recorded.
 
The earthquakes produced amplitudes ranging from eight to 55 mm and lasted between 32 and 78 seconds, Hanik Humaida, the chairman of BPPTKG, stated here, Thursday.
 
The authorities have announced the second alert status for the volcano and banned all climbing activities within a three-kilometer radius of the volcano's crater designated as a danger zone, and entry is permitted only for research on disaster mitigation.

Locals residing along Gendol River have been recommended to maintain vigil in case the volcano emits lava.  
 
On Friday, Mount Agung in Karangasem regency in the holiday island of Bali spewed a nearly two thousand-meter-high flume of thick ash into the air from its peak, which is some 5,142 meters above sea level.
 
The authorities have maintained the volcano's alert status at level three and declared a danger zone within a four-kilometer radius of the crater.
 
The seismogram recorded that the eruption lasted for three minutes and 37 seconds and had a maximum amplitude of 22 mm. The eruption could be audible from the Rendang volcano observation post in Karangasem.
 
Indonesia is blessed with fertile soil and various natural resources, but concurrently, the country is prone to natural disasters, as it is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, where numerous volcanoes and earthquakes occur.
 
During the period from January to mid-December last year, a total of 2,572 natural disasters had hit the country, leaving at least 4,821 people dead or missing.
 
Of the total, 96.9 percent of the natural disasters, were hydrometeorological in nature, such as floods, landslides, and whirlwind, while 3.1 percent of them, were geological disasters, such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. (Antara)
