Jakarta: The number of deaths from Thursday's strong earthquake in Maluku province has risen to 23, a National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) official said on Friday, September 27, 2019.
"According to the Maluku Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, as of 21.53 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT) on Thursday, September 26, 2019, the number of deaths has reached 23 people," BNPB spokeserson Agus Wibowo said in a written statement received by Medcom.id.
According to the BNPB official, 14 death victims were found in Central Maluku regency, the other six were found in Ambon city, while the remaining three were found in Seram regency.
In addition, more than 100 residents suffered light or heavy injuries, as many as 15 thousand residents were forced to leave their homes, while hundreds of homes and infrastructures were dameged by the strong earthquake.
The 6.5 magnitude eathquake shook Ambon and its nearby areas on Thursday morning. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 40 kilometers northwest of Ambon.
The earthquake did not trigger tsunami warnings. Nevertheless, the strong quake caused panic in Ambon.
